Uganda has been selected to host the inaugural Africa Dragon Boat Cup, scheduled for 1–4 October 2026, marking a major milestone in the country’s sports diplomacy and international events profile.
The announcement was made by Mr Solomon Muwonge, President of the Uganda Dragon Boat Federation, during a meeting with Ambassador Richard Kabonero, Head of Regional Economic Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The meeting was also attended by a delegation from the Africa Dragon Boat Federation led by its President, Mr Ehab Gouda, and General Secretary Ms Mary Lai, who are in Uganda to assess preparedness, train and certify local officials, and inspect potential venues.
Ambassador Kabonero applauded the Federation’s efforts to grow the sport locally. “Dragon Boat sport offers Ugandans an opportunity to develop their talent, market the country, and strengthen people-to-people relations,” he said.
Mr Gouda revealed that the 2026 competition will attract more than 500 professional athletes representing 16 countries across Africa, Europe, Asia, and South America. “We expect hundreds of fans to travel with their teams, in addition to millions who will follow the event online,” he said.
Dragon Boat racing, a traditional Chinese sport with more than 2,500 years of history, boasts over 50 million participants globally—40 million of whom are in China.
According to Ms Lai, Uganda stands to benefit significantly from hosting the continental championship. “The Africa Dragon Boat Cup 2026 gives Uganda a unique platform to showcase its tourism, investment, and trade opportunities. Sports can be a powerful door opener,” she noted.
The meeting was also attended by Ms Margaret Kafeero, Head of Public Diplomacy, and Mr Stilson Muhwezi, First Secretary in charge of Sports Diplomacy.
