The CECAFA Zonal champions needed a win in their final Group K match to advance, and they delivered a disciplined, resolute performance against a more experienced French side.

The decisive moment came in the 18th minute, when James Bogere finished expertly after a precise setup from captain Hamuza Ssengoba, giving Uganda the lead at the Aspire Zone Complex in Doha. France responded with opportunities, but Pierre Mounguengue and Christ Batola both missed key chances before halftime. Uganda goalkeeper Richard Okello also denied a close-range attempt just before the break.

In the second half, France’s Tidiane Diarrassouba tried a left-footed effort from the right side of the box in the 68th minute, but it went wide. Uganda’s defence held firm, successfully denying the French side any clear scoring opportunities.

When the final whistle blew, jubilation erupted for the Ugandan team, who became only the second African nation to defeat France at the U-17 World Cup. France still topped Group K and advanced to the knockout stage, alongside Canada, who qualified despite a 2-1 loss to Chile.

Uganda’s journey in the tournament began with a 2-1 defeat to Canada, followed by a 1-1 draw against Chile, but the historic win over France ensured their progression to the Round of 32.

James Bogere, whose goal sealed the victory, reflected on the team’s achievement: “Consistency, dedication and hard work.”

Other teams already confirmed for the knockout stage include Portugal, Argentina, Italy, Brazil, Zambia, Austria, USA, Republic of Ireland, Belgium, Japan, Senegal, Croatia, South Africa, Egypt, Venezuela, Switzerland, South Korea, North Korea, Morocco, Germany, Colombia, Tunisia, and England.
