President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni will today be officially nominated as a presidential candidate for the 2026 General Elections, with the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) vowing to deliver him a landslide victory.
Following his nomination at the Electoral Commission grounds in Lubowa, thousands of supporters are expected to gather at Kololo Independence Grounds for a mega rally under the theme “Protecting the Gains – As We Make a Quantitative Leap into a High Middle-Income Status.”
The joint mobilisation effort, led by NRM Secretary General Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong and PLU Secretary General David Kabanda seek to secure over 80 percent of the vote for President Museveni in the January 12, 2026, elections.
“The Movement is the main river, and there are many tributaries feeding into it,” Todwong said at a press briefing on Monday. “Today we are united for a common cause — to ensure the successful nomination of President Museveni, a coordinated campaign, and a decisive victory in 2026.”
The rally at Kololo is expected to demonstrate strong grassroots mobilisation by both NRM and PLU, with leaders emphasising continuity, peace, and economic transformation under Museveni’s leadership.
Security and Traffic Guidelines for Nomination Days
Ahead of the September 23–24 nominations, security agencies have issued strict traffic and security guidelines to ensure safety and public order:
Access to the Electoral Commission venue in Lubowa is limited to invited persons and aspirants only.
Traffic restrictions will be enforced on all routes leading to the venue, with each candidate limited to two vehicles per convoy, each carrying no more than 10 occupants.
Processions to and from the venue are prohibited, while the incumbent President, as per protocol, retains use of his official motorcade.
Security agencies have banned rowdy groups, hooliganism, intimidation of opponents, and provocation of security officers.
The public is reminded that weapons, unauthorised security activities, and disruption of public order will attract enforcement under election and criminal laws.
“We call on all Ugandans to promote peace and act as ambassadors of harmony during this period,” the joint security statement said.
With Museveni’s nomination taking place today, Uganda now enters a decisive phase on the road to the 2026 General Elections.
