The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has submitted over 2.2 million signatures to the Electoral Commission, far exceeding the legal requirement, to endorse President Yoweri Museveni as its flagbearer for the 2026 general elections.
At the handover, NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong stated, “We are taking more than two million signatures to the National Electoral Commission in fulfilment of one of the requirements for our chairman and flag bearer to be nominated. The more than two million signatures are already confirmed votes for the NRM party.”
He noted that all the names were from the national voters’ register and connected this support to Museveni’s recent endorsement as the sole candidate by all NRM party structures.
Todwong expressed confidence in the party’s future, stating, “We have been transforming Uganda for all these years, and we are continuing with our programs.”
He also predicted a stronger performance in the upcoming election, saying, “In this election, our performance will be much better compared to the previous elections, where the performances have varied between 70% and 65%.”
NRM Vice Chairperson for the Kampala Region, Hon. Salim Uhuru, also spoke about the party’s widespread support. “The NRM will overwhelmingly win the General elections because of the support it enjoys among Ugandans, particularly in Kampala,” he said, adding that they “will leave no stone unturned to ensure a massive victory for the Party at all levels.”
Ambassador Barbara Nekesa, the NRM National Treasurer, praised the extensive mobilization effort, calling it a “voice of the people right from the villages.” She highlighted that the signatures came from both NRM members and those from other political parties, stating, “We have a national character in the signatures that have been collected.”
She emphasised the importance of grassroots involvement and public ownership of the process, concluding, “We want our people to own the candidate. We want our NRM members and the members of the public to own the candidature of H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.”
President Museveni is scheduled to be officially nominated by the Independent Electoral Commission on September 23, 2025.
