Co-hosts Uganda Cranes kicked off their TotalEnergies CHAN 2024 campaign with a spirited performance against Algeria, drawing strong support from a vibrant home crowd at a packed Mandela National Stadium under the Namboole floodlights.

Despite the 3-0 final scoreline, the Cranes showed immense heart, resilience, and flashes of brilliance—especially in the second half—that left fans hopeful and energized about what lies ahead in the tournament.

The match started at a high tempo, with Algeria showing their attacking intent early. But Uganda’s defense, led by captain Allan Okello, held firm through the opening exchanges. Midfielder Emmanuel Anyama set the tone with his relentless effort in the middle of the park, even earning a booking as both teams battled for control.

Midway through the first half, Uganda found its rhythm. Jude Ssemugabi dazzled down the right flank, beating his marker and delivering a dangerous low cross, while Jonah Kakande came close to leveling the score just before halftime with a well-worked move orchestrated by Okello.

Coach Morley Byekwaso’s halftime adjustments, including the introduction of Karim Watambala and a positional switch for Okello, breathed new life into Uganda’s play. The Cranes pushed forward with renewed intensity, carving out chances and pressing Algeria deep into their own half. Okello, Watambala, and Kakande all tested the Algerian keeper in an inspired second-half spell that showcased Uganda’s attacking potential.

While Algeria capitalized on late opportunities to extend their lead, Uganda’s persistence and improved organization after the break were commendable. The team’s performance drew loud cheers from the home fans, who appreciated the fight and potential shown on the pitch.

Coach Byekwaso will take many positives from the game as the Cranes shift focus to their next Group C clash against Guinea on Friday, August 8. With Guinea having edged Niger 1-0 earlier, Uganda will be aiming to bounce back with a statement performance.

The journey has just begun—and the Cranes have already given fans a reason to believe.
