Uganda is mourning the passing of retired Supreme Court Justice and revered legal scholar Prof. George Wilson Kanyeihamba, who has died while undergoing treatment in the ICU at Nakasero Hospital, family sources have confirmed
Prof. Kanyeihamba served on the Supreme Court from 1997 to 2009, and held senior government roles including Attorney General, Minister of Justice, and Minister of Commerce.
He was instrumental in the drafting of Uganda’s 1995 Constitution, serving in the Constituent Assembly and chairing its legal committee.
A vocal advocate for constitutionalism and human rights, Kanyeihamba famously dissented in the 2006 presidential election ruling and criticised attacks on judicial independence.
He also represented Uganda at the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights and made lasting contributions to legal scholarship.
Tributes are pouring in from the legal fraternity, academia, and civil society. Funeral details are yet to be announced.
