Meron Kyomugisha Clinches Victory at 4th Lira Ladies Golf Open

Lira — A thunderous round of applause and celebration echoed across Lira Golf Course as Meron Kyomugisha of Kabale Golf Club emerged as the overall winner of the 4th Edition of the Lira Ladies Open Golf Championship 2025.

In a stunning comeback, Kyomugisha delivered an impressive final-day performance to secure the top spot, ahead of seasoned golfers Martha Babirye and Peace Kabasweka, who tied for second place.

“I didn’t have any hope of winning this tournament because my performance on Day One was completely below par,” Meron admitted. “But on Day Two, I managed to achieve total composure and executed exceptionally well, scoring a 78.”

The highly anticipated two-day championship, hosted at the beautifully manicured Lira Golf Course, saw over 100 golfers from across Uganda compete in various categories, including Elite Gross, Bronze, and Amateur divisions.

Veteran lady golfers Esther Okullo and Grace Obua opened the tournament in style, inspiring the next generation of female players. “Every day on the golf course is a learning moment,” said Okullo. “But socialising is the icing on the cake.”

Lady Captain of Lira Golf Club, Jennifer Opio Ekong, praised the turnout and spirit of the competition, extending heartfelt gratitude to the sponsors who made the event possible.

Chief among them was Equity Bank Uganda, the main partner of the tournament. Equity Bank has reserved a soft spot for golf, with support dating back to 2008.

“As Equity Bank Uganda, we value both the social and business aspects of the community, a key reason behind sponsoring the 4th edition of the Lira Ladies Open Golf Championship,” said Kenneth Okello, Manager of the Equity Bank Lira Branch.

Other sponsors included ICEA Lion, Uganda Golf Union, Tusker Lite, Bell Lager, Pepsi Uganda, and ViraForex, among others.

Day One saw the elite gross players tackle 36 holes under intense competition, while Day Two wrapped up with amateurs showcasing remarkable talent and grit. The final podium was set in a classic ambience as players, fans, and partners gathered to honour the winners.

Amateur golfer Emily Ayakaka praised Lira Golf Club for shaping her personal and business development, noting the strong networking opportunities the sport offers.

As the sun set on the 4th edition of the Lira Ladies Open, one thing was clear—Meron Kyomugisha’s name is now firmly etched in the championship’s growing legacy, and women’s golf in Uganda is soaring to new heights.
