President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has officially picked nomination forms to run for the positions of National Chairman of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and Presidential Flagbearer for the 2026 general elections, setting the stage for what could become his seventh successive term at the helm of Uganda’s leadership.

Accompanied by the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Museveni, the President arrived at the NRM Electoral Commission Headquarters in Kyadondo to a warm reception from hundreds of enthusiastic party supporters and senior party leaders.

Upon arrival, President Museveni was received by Vice President Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, NRM First National Vice Chairperson Al-Hajji Moses Kigongo, Second National Vice Chairperson Rt. Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Anita Among, and Secretary General Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, among other top NRM officials and Central Executive Committee (CEC) members.

Speaking after collecting the forms, Museveni reaffirmed his commitment to steering Uganda through its next phase of development under the NRM’s long-term vision.

“I expressed my interest in running for both the position of Presidential Flag Bearer and NRM Party National Chairman by picking up nomination forms at the NRM Headquarters in Kyadondo,” President Museveni said via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle.

“Since 1986, Uganda has progressed through five stages of development, and the NRM aims for the country to become a $500 billion economy in the next five years.”

In a pointed message to the party’s newly elected district chairpersons, the President cautioned against partisanship and self-interest.

“I urged the newly elected NRM district chairpersons to maintain impartiality and steer clear of corruption. Additionally, I encouraged party members to prioritise leaders who truly understand the party’s ideology and principles. It is important not to elect individuals who are driven by personal agendas instead of focusing on the national interest,” Museveni posted.

Also in attendance were the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, ministers, Members of Parliament, and a host of other party officials and dignitaries, all gathered in a show of unity and endorsement for Museveni’s continued leadership.

Museveni, who has led Uganda since 1986, will be seeking to extend his presidency beyond four decades if nominated and elected in 2026. His NRM party has already begun laying the groundwork for what is expected to be a vigorous national campaign under the theme of economic transformation and ideological continuity.
