Kigali, Rwanda – In a breathtaking display of grit and determination, Equity Bank’s Handball Team pulled off a historic 28–26 victory over defending champions Rwanda Police to claim the 2025 Genocide Memorial Cup in Kigali.

Roared on by a home crowd, Rwanda Police came into the final as firm favourites, bolstered by their reigning titleholder status and early momentum in the match. But Equity, still nursing the sting of narrowly missing out on the Kenya Premier League title earlier in the season, had a point to prove—and they delivered emphatically.

From the first whistle to the final seconds, the match was a high-octane showdown. Rwanda Police pressed hard early, building a lead and testing Equity’s composure. But the Kenyan side responded with a masterclass in resilience—tight defensive organisation, swift counterattacks, and clinical finishing at critical moments.

“This is more than a win—it’s a statement,” Equity Bank Kenya said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “After the heartbreak of the league, this triumph silences all doubts. Equity is back on top. They’ve not just lifted the trophy; they’ve raised the bar.”

The win not only marks a major comeback for Equity’s handball squad but also establishes them as a formidable force in regional handball. The Genocide Memorial Cup is one of East Africa’s most prestigious tournaments, held annually to honour the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. This year’s edition brought together elite teams from across the region in an emotionally charged, high-spirited competition.

With this title, Equity Bank’s team has turned redemption into glory, proving that setbacks are only setups for greater comebacks. As the players lifted the trophy high under the Kigali skies, one thing was clear—Equity isn’t just back. They are here to dominate.
