The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (International Affairs), Hon. Okello Oryem, on May 30, 2025, held a bilateral meeting with Mr. Inoue Yoichi, the Country Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in Uganda.

The meeting took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters and focused on enhancing the long-standing partnership between Uganda and Japan, particularly through JICA’s development programmes.

Mr. Inoue provided an overview of JICA’s ongoing support in Uganda, highlighting key achievements such as the successful completion of major infrastructure projects, including the landmark Karuma Bridge—an enduring symbol of the strong cooperation between the two nations.

He reiterated JICA’s commitment to deepening its development presence in Uganda by expanding initiatives in strategic sectors.

Of particular note were current projects in Yumbe District in the West Nile region, where JICA is implementing programmes aimed at improving livelihoods through horticulture and rice cultivation. These efforts are designed to boost food security, increase household incomes, and enhance resilience in both West Nile and Northern Uganda.

Hon. Okello Oryem expressed appreciation for JICA’s sustained contribution to Uganda’s development and lauded the Government of Japan for its unwavering support.

He affirmed Uganda’s commitment to continued collaboration with JICA in identifying and implementing priority projects aligned with national development objectives, especially in agriculture, infrastructure, and community empowerment.

The meeting concluded with mutual appreciation for the enduring Uganda–Japan bilateral relationship and a shared commitment to expanding cooperation for the benefit of Uganda’s people.
