The Uganda Cranes bounced back with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Guinea in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Mandela National Stadium on Tuesday night. A stunning free-kick from Allan Okello in the 34th minute sealed the victory, earning Uganda three crucial points in Group G.
Head coach Paul Put made four changes to the starting lineup, introducing goalkeeper Nafian Alionzi, Ronald Ssekiganda, Travis Mutyaba, and Rogers Mato. Defender Elio Capradossi captained the side in the absence of Khalid Aucho and Isima Watenga.
The Cranes started strong, creating early chances. Rogers Mato came close in the 16th minute, but Guinea’s goalkeeper Sylla denied him. Muhammad Shaban also had two close calls, first from an Okello corner and then from a Kayondo cutback.
The breakthrough came when Okello curled in a brilliant free-kick just outside the box, sparking wild celebrations from the home fans. Guinea’s Camara was booked for fouling Mutyaba, leading to the set-piece.
In the second half, Uganda reinforced their defense, introducing Timothy Awany for Elvis Bwomono at halftime. Calvin Kabuye and Jude Ssemugabi were also brought in to maintain the lead. Guinea pushed for an equalizer, but Alionzi made a crucial 87th-minute save to deny the visitors.
The Cranes’ defense remained solid, securing a vital win and moving Uganda to 9 points from 6 games. Guinea remains on 7 points.
