“This marks the conclusion of the 2024 examinations calendar and sets the stage for the next academic cycle,” said CPA Prof. Laura Aseru Orobia, Chairperson of the Public Accountants Examinations Board (PAEB).

CPA Prof. Laura Aseru Orobia, Chairperson of the Public Accountants Examinations Board (PAEB).

“We are proud to see a growing interest in our programmes. December 2024 saw 6,795 candidates sitting for exams, a 6.6% increase from May. This growth is a testament to the resilience and determination of our candidates,” she noted.

Key Highlights of the Results

Accounting Technicians Diploma (ATD):

A total of 94 candidates sat for the ATD exams, with a pass rate of 51%. Notably, female candidates excelled, achieving 67.2% of the total passes. Top performers included Judith Catherine Aanyu (Business Communication) and Eria Mukasa Mwebe (Principles of Taxation).

Certified Tax Advisor (CTA):

The CTA programme saw a 48.5% pass rate among 146 candidates. Prof. Orobia emphasized the growing importance of tax advisory in Uganda’s economy, encouraging graduates to leverage their qualifications.

Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (CPA-U):

Over 6,500 candidates sat for CPA-U exams, presenting 11,207 scripts with an overall pass rate of 35.6%. Female candidates again demonstrated exceptional performance, securing 57.7% of the passes. Matthew Kambanda (Financial Accounting) and Javis Birungi Atuhura (Integration of Knowledge) were among the standout candidates.

Strategies for Improvement

Prof. Orobia outlined measures to enhance exam performance, including webinars, tuition provider engagements, and access to past papers and examiners’ reports. “We encourage students to attend our free virtual webinars, as data shows attendees are more likely to succeed,” she stated.

She further remindedCPA graduates to complete the Practical Experience Training (PET) and apply for ICPAU membership. “This is a crucial step to fully integrating into the professional community,” emphasized Orobia.

Future Initiatives

ICPAU announced exciting plans for 2025, including the unveiling of the 6th Student Scholarship Programme beneficiaries on January 15, 2025, hosting the Pan-African Public Finance Management (PFM) Conference in February 2025 and new specialised masterclasses in data analytics, personal financial planning, and business valuation.

CPA Ronald Mutumba, Vice President of ICPAU, encouraged resilience among candidates who did not pass.

“Failure is not the end; it is a step in the learning process. We urge students to remain focused and take advantage of the resources we offer,” he remarked.
