Kampala, Uganda – December 9, 2024: The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has announced a significant milestone in improving water transport on Lake Kyoga.

The newly constructed ferries, MV BKK 1 and MV BKK 2, have successfully completed their sea trials, marking the final phase of testing before their official commissioning.

Water Connectivity

The two ferries promise to revolutionise transport and connectivity across Lake Kyoga, linking vibrant communities and fostering regional economic growth.

MV BKK 1 will connect Bukungu to Kagwara, serving Serere and Soroti communities while MV BKK 2 will link Bukungu to Akampala, enhancing access to Kaberamaido.

Once operational, these ferries will create seamless connections across more than eight districts in the Eastern region, bridging the Busoga, Teso, Kaberamaido, and Lango sub-regions.

Testing

Sea trials, a critical phase in vessel construction, assess the ferry’s strength, stability, and readiness for operational deployment. These trials ensure the vessels can safely navigate open waters and meet the needs of their future users.

“Sea trails are a vessel’s ultimate test on open waters after months of construction. It’s where the ferry proves its strength, stability and readiness to conquer the waves,” said UNRA on its X platform.

UNRA collaborated with M/S Songoro Marine Transport Limited (SMT) to construct the ferries, bringing advanced marine engineering expertise to the project.

“We are excited to see this vision come to life. These ferries will not only enhance connectivity but also drive economic development and social integration in the region,” stated UNRA officials.

Transforming Lives and Regional Trade

The new ferry services will improve access to markets and essential services, boost tourism by linking culturally rich regions and reduce travel time and enhance safety for waterway users.

The commissioning of MV BKK 1 and MV BKK 2 represents a significant leap in Uganda’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure and fostering regional development.

Residents and stakeholders eagerly await the official launch, which is expected to open a new chapter in Lake Kyoga’s water transport history.
