A seven year old girl in Kisoro district has been killed by mudslides following heavy storms that poured down on Friday evening.
The body of the deceased, identified as Gift Mbonimpa, a daughter of Mbarubukeye Fred of Mwanjali-Lulembwe village in Nyarusiza sub county, Kisoro district was recovered on Saturday morning at 8am.
Police say that Mbonimpa in the company of other children had gone to collect firewood in Mwanjari village in Gitenderi parish, Nyarusiza sub county on Friday evening when the heavy downpour suddenly started. The other other children then ran back home and left the 7-year-old behind.
Her dead body was found in an irish potato garden on Saturday.
The Police spokesperson for Kigezi region, Elly Matte said that the deceased was swept off and later killed by the massive running mud slides from the Muhabura Mountain.
The same mudslides destroyed houses, schools and peoples crops in the villages of Murora, Gasuri, Mugwata, Gashondori and Garole in Muramba sub county.
“It is very unfortunate to have lost this child under such circumstances. Children should always be guided by an adult whether they are going to school, to collect firewood in the bush or staying home, to protect them from such dangers,” Matte cautioned.
“Had there been an adult person yesterday, this girl would not have lost her life,” he added.
