34 Arrested at Namugongo as Martyrs Day Celebrations Start

Police have arrested 34 suspected thieves at Namugongo Martyrs Shrines as celebrations kick off today, Friday June 3, 2022.

ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy PRO KMP, said joint task teams will continue to safeguard pilgrims at Namugongo for Martyrs Day celebrations.

“We are also registering more people arriving at the Anglican and Catholic shrines. However, some of these are wrong elements.”

Owoyesigyire said they have so far registered four cases of theft of phones, one of stealing from a motor vehicle and one of indecent assault at Anglican Shrine.

Meanwhile, at the Catholic shrine, police registered 36 cases (35 thefts and one of issuing counterfeit currency).

“We have arrested 34 suspects and they are detained at Kira Division Police Station.”

“We thank the pilgrims for following the security guidelines and being peaceful. We want to assure the members of the public that we will continue to safeguard them as they celebrate Martyrs Day,” Owoyesigyire noted.
