One Ugandan has been kidnapped and three other people all Ugandans shot and injured by unknown assailants said to have been wearing Congolese attire.
Police say that armed assailants waylaid a vehicle (Isuzu Canter) in which the four were traveling in Queen Elizabeth national park and shot at and injured them. An unspecified amount of money was also robbed by the armed people.
Police in Kanungu is hunting for armed assailants who shot and injured three people, robbed them of yet unspecified amount of money and one kidnapped for a ransom.
It is alleged that on Thursday at around 2 pm at the Queen Elizabeth National park near Southern gate army barracks,
four armed personnel dressed in Congolese army attire emerged and shot at the vehicle, Reg No UAB 196J. Three of the occupants were injured in the legs, according to the Police spokesperson for Kigezi, Elly Matte.
Matte said that the vehicle was carying fish from Kasese.
One of the injured has been identified as Patrick Bukora, 40, a resident of Migyera cell, Migyera town council in Nakasongola district who was driving. The others are Julius Saturday, 36, a businessman and resident of Nsolo B cell, North A ward, Western Division in Busia municipality (Busia district) and Nasolo Sauda, 40, a business woman of Kiyola cell Namasagali parish Nabweru s/c Nakasongola district.
The fourth person, named Robert Mugabe was kidnapped and the Police Spokesperson Kigezi said that Mugabe’s captors are currently using his phone number to demand a ransom of USD 20,000, an equivalent of Shs 76 million.
The injured are admitted at Kihihi Health Centre V.
“It is very unfortunate that our people who are traveling on their own business were waylaid, shot at and robbed while the other was kidnapped,” Matte said.
“Our police on ground in Kanungu together with sister security agencies are on a hunt for those assailants. We are doing everything possible to ensure that we bring this vice in the park to an end”.
He asked the public to report any suspicious persons to the relevant authorities.
