Three police officers have been arrested in Kisoro district for their alleged involvement in the murder of a 45-year-old man and injuring two others.
One of the police officers is said to have shot and killed a man identified as Stephen Ntagahorero, a resident of Gikoro village Rwingwe parish Nyakabande sub-county in Kisoro district.
Some other two persons named Desteriyo Munyaneza, 17, and Posiano Maniragaba, 49 yrs, from the same village were left injured in the incident.
The suspected shooter is Mwanga Paul (Number 65261 pc) attached to the Police Field Force Unit (FFU). This is according to a statement by the Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, Elly Matte.
The incident occured on Tuesday morning, at around 10am, at Gikoro village.
It is alleged that the suspect together with two other police officers known as No 46585 pc Adii Denis, a canine officer and a detective one No 36627 Dc Mwanamwolho Amos all attached to Kisoro police station, had gone to visit a scene of burglary and theft reported by Gaston Ntamakuriro.
Ntamakuriro’s bar had reportedly been broken into and his goat, a coat and a saucepan were stolen.
“When they [Mwanga and two other officers] reached there, they realized that the scene had been tampered with hence the dog could not do much,” said the Kigezi Police spokesperson in his statement.
This, according to the statement angered the complainant who then incited others to attack the police.
“The officer who was armed scared the people in vain, as they continued advancing to harm them and in the process, he shot the deceased dead on spot and injured the two,” adds the statement.
The three police officers managed to leave the scene unhurt.
The body of the deceased person has been taken to Kisoro hospital mortuary for postmortem and the injured were taken to Mutolere hospital while all the three officers have been detained to help in inquiries.
Matte warned civilians who have a tendency of attacking security officers, saying that had this not happened, a life would not have been lost or any person injured.
