3 Dead, 2 Missing After Boat Capsizes on Lake Victoria

Police in Namayingo district is searching for two people who went missing after a boat capsized on Lake Victoria killing three people over the weekend.

The incident occurred at Buyaga in Sigulu West, Namayingo district when 17 people were sailing in a boat from Bugoto in Mayuge to Maninga beacsh in Sigulu.

According to Police Spokesperson, SSP Emilian Kayima, police responded to a distress call but three people had died and two others missing to date. A sailor identified as Ivan Ssemalulu, 22, was in the proximity when the incident happened and managed to save 12 of the people from the capsized boat.

The group were traveling at night and the incident happened at 9:30pm.

The dead have been identified as Bwoza Kathan, 53, Nabirye Lukia, 40, and Hadijjah Muhammad, 25.

Kayima said that the two who are missing are; 25-year-old Mugweri Rashid and 48-year-old Obama Hussein.

Police has cautioned fishermen and sailors against sailing during night time and to ensure that they use life jackets.

“We want to caution those using water transport to avoid traveling at night because in case of danger, rescue could be a problem,” Emilian Kayima said during a press conference on Monday.
